What we do

We grind the stump, then we can take the mess with us. Book one or both.

Main service

Stump grinding

A grinder with carbide teeth chews the stump into wood chips, down past the root flare. No digging out, no chemicals, no waiting a year for it to rot.

  • Single stumps or whole-yard cleanups
  • Surface root grinding along the stump
  • Fits through a standard 36-inch backyard gate
  • Chips left as backfill, or hauled off with debris removal
Add-on service

Debris removal

A ground stump leaves a mound of wood chips and dirt, often bigger than the stump itself. We load it up and haul it away so the spot is ready for sod, seed or a new bed.

  • Grindings and wood chips removed from the site
  • Loose roots and leftover chunks picked up
  • Area raked level when we leave
  • Priced per stump, added to your grinding quote
How it works

From photo to flat ground

  1. Send a photo

Snap the stump with something for scale, or measure it across at ground level. We reply with a price.

  2. We call 811

Before any grinding, we request a free utility locate so buried gas, water and cable lines get marked.

  3. Grind it down

The stump comes down 6 to 12 inches below grade. Most stumps take under an hour.

  4. Clean up

We backfill the hole with chips and rake the area, or add debris removal and we haul everything away.

How to measure

Measure straight across the widest part of the stump, right at ground level. Include the flared roots that rise above the dirt, but not the ones running flat underground.

Questions

Common questions

How much does stump grinding cost?

Each stump is priced by its diameter at ground level. Stumps up to 20 inches are $150, and most yard trees fall between $150 and $300. Debris removal is $50 per stump. The full price list is in the estimate section above.

Are you insured?

Yes. StumpWorks carries general liability insurance, so your property is covered while we work.

Will it damage my lawn?

The grinder rolls on wide tires and we lay down boards on soft ground. You'll see some chips and a patch of bare dirt where the stump was, which grass fills back in.

What happens to the roots?

We grind the stump and the surface roots near it. Roots deeper underground are left to break down on their own, which is normal and won't regrow for most trees.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

Yes, once the chips are cleared and the hole is filled with topsoil. Planting a foot or two off-center gives the new roots fresh soil.

How much debris does one stump leave?

More than most people expect. A 24-inch stump can leave a pile of chips and soil a couple of feet high. Debris removal clears all of it so you're not left shoveling.

Do I need to be home?

No. If the stump is reachable and the gate is unlocked, we can do the work and send photos when it's done.
